February 12, 2010: Search Marketing Meets Social Media

Our monthly gathering is Friday, February 12, 6 p.m. at ING DIRECT Cafe! Our topic is search marketing for the web and how it intersects with the ubiquitous use of social media. Please check out the changes we have implemented for 2010!

Featured Presentation: Social Media Optimization with Rob Bertholf

Rob Bertholf

Although Social Media Club approaches social media marketing from a starting point of customer conversation, there is no disputing that social media can also be search marketing and search engine optimization on steroids. Our guest speaker, Rob Bertholf, is often acknowledged as Hawaii’s #1 search marketing expert, and he will be giving us an overview of some of the social media optimization methods he has developed for his clients. He will be giving an in-depth workshop the following day at U-H Manoa. We are lucky to be offering this sneak preview to you free of charge!

About Rob:
In the crowded marketplace of SEO experts, Rob is literally a cut above the rest. With a top 10 Google ranking for “Search Engine Optimization Expert” and for a search of “United States Air Force Veteran” former Staff Sergeant Bertholf demonstrates how his effective techniques provide results in even the most saturated environments. Prior to joining Chapter Three as Chief Search Architect Rob was already a seasoned digital pioneer, @Rob sent the first “tweet” from Hawaii and oversaw the creation of over 700 websites as inventor of ZeppOS Content Management Application and founder/former CEO of Empowered Internet Solutions. Rob continues to find innovative ways to leverage the marketing power of the web for his clients. He also shares his SEO and web marketing insights as a regular keynote speaker/lecturer for corporate and academic audiences.

Check Out These Improvements for 2010 at Social Media Club Hawaii

New for 2010:

  1. Meetings will be one hour to allow more time for networking before and after.
  2. Presentations will be at a more advanced level, targeting social media practitioners primarily. Everyone is welcome though so don’t let this deter you!
  3. Share time: during the meeting proper, we will have scheduled time for group conversation. We want you to share your tips, your questions, and your announcements. This is our “crowd-sourcing” component where we can all learn from each other.
  4. Eventbrite registration service will be our event management provider. Please be sure to let us know you are coming so we can help promote you and your website. We hope this will make the on-site sign in process MUCH easier too!
  5. We are expanding our volunteer positions to help the club get even more done in 2010. Please consider adding your name to the list. It’s good exposure and learning for you, and the more support we have as an all-volunteer business organization, the less there is for each of us to do. By the way, our meetings are great opportunities to showcase your knowledge, and if you are a newbie, working with us as a volunteer is a great learning opportunity. All of the things we do to promote our events are things any business can learn to use successfully to market on a near zero budget. Serving in the community also adds to your personal brand, expertise, and credibility.
  6. Additional training programs will be offered throughout the year by our members; we’ll be sharing these with you as we learn about them. And if you have one, please tell us so we can share it with our mailing list.

Some things won’t be changing – such as the warm reception every one receives at our events. The events also remain educational and non-commercial. Although we encourage each attendee to “network like crazy” you can be sure that none of the presentations are paid commercials. If you like the speakers, please do support them though. They have offered their time to us for free.

If you have a topic or case study to present, please tell us about it here.

January 2010 – No Meeting This Month However…

Greetings everyone! There will be no meeting this month as Tess and I are catching our breath after the intense year of launching the club in 2009. We’d love to get some ideas from you about what all you would like to see, so please leave us some comments here so we have an open discussion.

Our first year was incredibly successful – we averaged over 35 people per meeting, all of which were free thinks in large part the generous space offered by Cleo Brown and the entire staff at ING Direct Cafe. We covered the basic started kit of topics, as we also provided six plus months of training and support for the winner of our nonprofit contest, Ma Ka Hana Ka ʻIke. You can read a summary of that series over on my company blog. Then visit the new and socialized web home base for Ma Ka Hana Ka ʻIke at www.hanabuild.org. Tess, Shane, and I made a visit to Hana in October and were blow away by the work they are doing, as well as the love and respect they have earned in the community. I feel so good about their progress – it is a very deserving organization and they have continued to reach up to learn more and more.

In our second year we would like to engage more with the social media practitioners here in Hawaii, and we want to take the show on the road to the neighbor islands as well. We have grass roots support and some great starting connections on Maui, Molokai, and the Big Island; we have some work to do reaching out to Kauai and Lanai. I hope you will help me by telling your friends and colleagues there about the Social Media Club.

We do have some obstacles to be overcome though. Primarily we need a larger committee to run the club. Tess and I have been doing the large majority of the work, and we want help! Most other Social Media Club chapters have 5-10 active directors who help run the club and get the word out in the community. If you have an interest in supporting us and promoting your own business, we welcome you. Please drop an email to socialmediaclubhawaii@gmail.com and let us know a little about you. We’ll be putting together a small planning meeting later in January.

We Have Questions – Do You Have Answers?
What day and time is convenient for you for meetings? We held most of our meetings on Fridays from 6-7:30 – great for socializing but sometimes a conflict with family and Waikiki traffic.
What form would you like the meetings to take? More interactive discussions, continue with presentations, more social – just meet to talk amongst ourselves, etc?
How can the club support you? Be sure and tell us if you are a business wanting to learn about social media or if you are a social media practitioner wanting to grow your business, etc.
What kind of location would you like us to use? Stay at ING, move to a more private meeting room, move to a bar/restaurant? Give us some ideas!
What goals should we have for 2010? How can we as social media peeps make an impact on our community?

I hope to hear your thoughts on these or other topics.

A hui hou,

Roxanne Darling

December 11 Brings Stockings Full of Social Media

Come Party!

As we round out the year, we wanted to take a look back at where we’ve been. After launching the monthly meetings in April of 2009, we then set out to teach Hawaii about social media. To accomplish this task, we worked with a non-profit so everyone could watch a hands-on approach to building a social media campaign.

This month, we celebrate our accomplishments with an informal meeting…or should we say, social networking at its core. We’ll be meeting in the upstairs loft of ING Direct Cafe. We won’t be having a formal presentation. We will be interviewing Kirsten and Rick of our nonprofit educational support project. We’ll be having light pupus and lots of time for some in-depth socializing! Bring plenty of business cards! Holiday attire is welcome.

We’ll wrap up (no pun intended) 2009 and look towards our goals and objectives for 2010. In the spirit of giving, and to honor all our non-profits who participated in this year’s contest, club founder and sponsor Roxanne Darling of Bare Feet Studios will offer a “Social Networking for Non-Profits” ebook for all those in attendance.

Kirsten and Rick Rutiz of Ma Ka Hana Ka ʻIke will talk to us about their 6 months of social media bootcamp We will also be thanking our campaign sponsors, Hawaiian Airlines and the Hilton Waikiki Prince Kuhio, and our perennial sponsors, ING Direct Cafe and Bare Feet Studios.

We look forward to seeing you and greeting you with holiday cheer!

PowerPoint® Karaoke

Submitted by Kyle Nishioka – this is a true “social” “media” event! — Roxanne Darling

Picture 2
Imagine this: You have to deliver a PowerPoint® presentation about an unfamiliar topic, with slides you’ve never seen, to an audience eager to heckle and laugh at you. If you’re in your underwear, you’re having a nightmare. If you’re clothed, it’s called PowerPoint Karaoke.

I will record presentations and post them to YouTube. The best presentations will be entered into a contest where the winner will win $5,000. More information can be found on the Powerpoint Karaoke 2009 website.

Update Oct 7: ShaneRobinson has volunteered to be our live photographer for this event. Thank you Shane! Who wants to be our live tweeter or live blogger?

Thank you to Tom Trenz

We want to extend our thanks to Tom Trenz for speaking to us about LinkedIn at our last meeting. He showed us an Outlook plugin, called xobni, that lets you track conversation across multiple social networks. However only about 30% of the people in the room use Outlook.
