July 10 Meeting: Ethics in Social Media

Aloha Social Media Clubbers!

andy bumatai photoWe look forward to you joining us next week on Friday, July 10 at ING DIRECT as we have a panel discussion on ethics in social media/new media. The moderator will be Andy Bumatai (pictured at left), and our confirmed panelists are Arleen Anderson (Internet Marketer), Nathan Kam (Public Relations at McNeil Wilson), Bill Sodeman (Professor of Information Systems and Business at HPU, and Erika Engle, Business Writer at the Star Bulletin). We do not expect any of the panelists to bear the responsibility of “most ethical” – rather, we are looking for diverse opinions and experience so we can have a lively, informed, respectful discussion on these sometimes controversial issues. There will be plenty of time for audience discussion and interaction too..

UPDATE:  Nathan Kam shared these links for PRSA’s updated Ethics Code and member interest in Social Media.

You can watch the uStream videos from this event here. There are four video clips; look at the time stamp to view them in order.

Our meetings are free and open to the public. We meet to share and develop best practices for using social media and social networks to build our personal brands, our businesses, and support our community. The Hawaii chapter is part of the international organization, Social Media Club, with over 40 active chapters worldwide.

Meeting Agenda:

5:00 – 5:30 pm ~ Optional Networking and Meeting Setup
5:30 – 7:00 pm ~ Panel Discussion

If the Internet cooperates, we will be live-streaming here.

Parking is available in the rear, or if full, you can use the empty lot around the block on Niu St. (Kalakaua then left on Pau to Ala Wai to Niu). Here is a Google map to give you the visual orientation.

See you there I am finally going to be home on a meetup day.

    Todd..

  2. Nathan Kam says:

Aloha SMC members and fans…I look forward to participating on this ethics panel. If there are specific questions related to social media + public relations + travel and tourism + ethics that you’d like me to address, please let me know. You can reach me on Twitter at @nathankam or via email at nathan dot kam at hawaiiantel dot net.

  3. Erika Engle says:

Howzit guys! I, too, would welcome questions in advance so I can (hopefully) have more thoughtful answers prepared. I find that I often think up better answers AFTER such events are over — with no venue in which to relay them. Maybe if I get some questions ahead of time I’ll have fewer, “Gah, I WISH I had said … ” moments. ^.^ You can e-mail ‘em to me at erika@starbulletin.com, DM me @erikaengle on Twitter or hit my FB inbox at facebook.com/erikaengle! (I’m also on LinkedIn and Chi.mp but spend hardly any time there as of now.)

  4. To all: we have a link to a form in the above post where you can submit your questions and/or discussion topics for the panel. We’ll be sharing your ideas in advance with them. You can also follow this link to submit your questions too.

  5. billso says:

I’m looking forward to this panel discussion. If you want to send me questions related to business or information ethics, use the link above or DM me on Twitter @billso – or message me on http://facebook.com/bill.sodeman/ – I’m spending more of my social media time on those two sites these days.

I’m on other sites – see the profile links in my DandyID section at http://billso.com/ and on Facebook.

I’ll post a page with some links and news articles later this week at http://billso.com/
