We’ve made a late change in our agenda! Our March meeting will address the recent tsunami in Hawaii. While the experience is still fresh with us all, we want to hear from the experts and from you! Think of this as real life intelligence gathering, so we can go back to our organizations with better laid plans for future events. It is always easier when we have a real example rather than trying to manufacture a viable plan from “what if’s.”
We would like to create a white paper out of this meeting to share with the Hawaii business and nonprofit community, so your insights and feedback are important to makeing this the best it can be! We welcome virtual attendees! Please go ahead and register so we can send you last minute details. Then join us IRT via the Twitter tag #SMCHI or in the chat room at our live video stream: http://bit.ly/smchitv
Our guest expert will be Brian Shiro, a geophysicist at NOAA Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. He will be able to share with us some of what takes place behind the scenes where the high tech and mission-critical monitoring is taking place. We will also track what things you saw – or didn’t see – that help us all respond quickly and with aloha. Follow Brian on Twitter @BrianShiro.UPDATE 16 March 2011:
View informational slides that Brian prepared here.
View Judi Clark’s live blog report from the meeting here.
Read the US Navy’s social media communication plan during the tsunami warning.
Read the Pacific Business News report indicating local government leaders missed the boat posting updates to their web communities. (I’d venture to say so did PBN. Their Twitter feed is a one-way bot that only puts out links to their published articles. Not really getting it.)

Perfect! Does this mean we will see you there tomorrow? And Dave, sounds like it is time for you to become a professional member of the Social Media Club! See the home page for external link to the parent org – a global nonprofit educational association for social media practitioners.
Roxanne, I’ll be there and try to bring some folks from NDPTC. I’ll check out SMC also.
I would like to come, but will not know till tomorrow. I know, I hate late RSVPs, too! Argh
I love any and all RSVP’s, I even love walk-ins!
Good idea to focus on this important topic. I addressed Social Media in Times of Crisis in this article that I just published.

@LindaSherman @KauaiTalk
Thanks Linda! We are asking anyone who has written about this or has plans they wish to share with to please do so!
100% agreed – word to word! To me Social Media is the most hyped around buzz word of current times. We all know it; We all understand it; And we all are, well at times, upset about it. I have tried to use simple techniques like “Learn about Time Management”, “Define your goals properly”, “Prioritize your activities”, etc. to make sure I don’t get addicted and glued to my facebook account all the time. I have tried to capture all that in my blog: http://blog.ellipsissolutions.com/2011/03/15/is-social-media-messing-with-your-social-life/
Hope it will help others too.
Thanks,
GT

Alll the best, Ron
There are some good academic papers on twitter use during disasters here:

It’s listed on slide 12 of my presentation, but slideshare messed up the format when it converted the PPT, so the link is hidden.
