Looking back at the tweet stream, (hashtag #HiMari) there were dozens and dozens of actionable tips: enough to put on your “Facebook Page To Do List” for a good 12 months in my opinion! In fact, I am so excited about all the nuggets that flew by I am sorting through the hashtag conversation and will be posting a separate Tip Sheet in a week or so. I will update this post when that is ready for viewing.

UPDATE 2011-10-26: Member Peter Liu created a Tweetdoc with all the tweets. Available for download here.

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2011 – HONOLULU, HI – 6-9 pm

We will be meeting at our favorite space, Amuse Wine Bar in the Cupola Room for an extended gathering 6 – 9 pm. We are still polishing the details, however you can be thinking about *your* social media accomplishments in the past year. This is not a competition! And like most all aspects of social media, everyone is invited! We think of it as our “un-awards” gala!

Here Are The Highlights:

What would you like to share with our Hawaii community?
- Big or small, we honor your adventures in social media – aka the modern way to connect with your customers and employees.
- What are the key points of your story?
- Who was beneficial in helping you?
- What have you gained as a result?
- Submit your story here.
Would you be interested in sponsoring this event?
- We are collecting prizes to give away.
- We would like to be able to purchase some party decorations.
- We have a number of neighbor island members attending; can you assist with lodging, car rental, or airfare?
- Prize drawings – to be announced on Twitter so as not to interrupt the party AND to give you maximum buzz! (We did this last year and it was great fun.) Submit your prize here.
Who will attend with you?
- This will be a fun event to share with colleagues at work.
- Have you been more social with friends? Invite them!
- Do you support a nonprofit who could benefit from social media? Please introduce them to our hui.
- Click here to RSVP for this event so we can have your name tag ready at the door.
What will be happening at the event?
- Food and drinks available for purchase.
- Music and possibly spontaneous outbreaks of dancing…
- Viewing your accomplishments on the big screen, looping all night long.
- Do you Spotify? Add your favorite party songs to our open playlist for the night!

We know that buying any new type of product or service can be confusing! Social media is just the same, especially when new social networks and technology are being created virtually every month! In any new industry there are growing pains for establishing best practices, creating market demand, and of course sorting out the charlatans from the competents. This survey will provide us a snapshot of what’s happening here in Hawaii and be able to compare ourselves to other markets around the globe.

We’ve also heard on the street that some of the people at our meetings want more formal presentations, Well, we have that for you this month!

We will feature a panel of our professional members who will explain the numerous ways to plan and purchase social media services. Here is a short URL you can use to help us spread the word: http://t.co/vGhoXgO

We had our first SMCEDU conference call today and are sharing with you the notes from the call, plus the audio of the call itself. If you are interested in this topic, please leave a comment and/or join our email list so we can keep you in the loop!

Our local chapter membership has grown considerably in the past few months and we now have an active “SIG” or special interest group focused on education and engaging with Hawaii’s college-level students, educators, and administrators. Globally, there has been an #SMCEDU initiative underway for two years.

On the call:

Tara Coomans, Moderator, President SMCHI
Burt Lum, Bytemarks Cafe and Windward Community College
Chuck Lasker, SocialKauiai.com, developing course for Kauai Community College
Jesse Mahoney, SocialKauai.com, developing course for Kauai Community College
Julia Myers – Chaminade University Outreach
Roxanne Darling, Bare Feet Studios, SMCHI Founder
Note: All of our members can be found in the blogroll in our sidebar.

Notes:

Key issues for developing a college curriculum:
- acceptable use policy
- privacy issues
- ethics

Local Courses:
Chuck & Jesse want to develop a certification track to help people get jobs in social media over at Kauai Community College. So far it is slow going. Burt is starting a Social Media class at Windward Community College this fall in the computer sciences department; tech focus. The IT department is very excited to have this new offering!

Status of Global and Local SMCEDU:
Tara shared the current status of SMCEDU: a working group for the past 2 years, 9 student chapters at local colleges, early stages of developing standards for Social Media Curricula at the college level.

Many resources are available via Social Media Club – student chapters that are already organized, professionals at various colleges who can lend support, use the main SMC site and follow the hashtag: #SMCEDU. As a local chapter, we can support EDU locally by sharing case studies, guest lecturing, use of our mailing list for those with EDU preferences, our FB page, website, etc.

We discussed open education iniitatives – podcasting courses and looking in iTunes for existing coursework for reference. (Rox mentioned that Stanford and UC Berkeley have been podcasting their entire course catalog for years; she knows of easy, affordable turnkey solutions for classroom recording.)

We agreed to collaborate on course development and delivery via sharing notes, getting support from the professional members, providing guest speakers, etc.

Goal: to create a state-wide Student Chapter of SMC so all colleges and Universities can collaborate. Jesse will add a sub-group to our FB page so we can keep each other in the loop. Julia thinks this is very doable so long as we have some leadership to keep all the students and educators informed. (Hence the Facebook sub-group coming soon!)

Tara has created a subgroup on LinkedIn for EDU discussions. This is part of our members-only area. Please let us know if you would like to know more about joining! There is a Student/Teacher rate of only $25 per year.

We agreed to have monthly calls for ongiong brainstorming and support.
Third Tuesday, 9 am.

Next Call:Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at 9 am. Rox will post *new* conference call info in LinkedIn. Plan on 30-60 minutes. Today’s call was completed in about 45 minutes.

You can listen to the call here:
Tara has created a subgroup on LinkedIn for EDU discussions. This is part of our members-only area. Please let us know if you would like to know more about joining! There is a Student/Teacher rate of only $25 per year.

We agreed to have monthly calls for ongiong brainstorming and support.
Third Tuesday, 9 am.

Next Call:Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at 9 am. Rox will post *new* conference call info in LinkedIn. Plan on 30-60 minutes. Today's call was completed in about 45 minutes.

This month we are putting our professional members on the hot seat so you can ask those burning questions you have about using social media successfully. Perfectly reasonable people may disagree about the answers, however our main goal is to stimulate dialog on both newbie as well as advanced topics. As you may have noticed, the tagline for Social Media Club is “If you get it, share it.” Unlike traditional professional associations, we do not want to keep our expertise for ourselves only – we want to share it with you and with each other!

We’ve made a late change in our agenda! Our March meeting will address the recent tsunami in Hawaii. While the experience is still fresh with us all, we want to hear from the experts and from you! Think of this as real life intelligence gathering, so we can go back to our organizations with better laid plans for future events. It is always easier when we have a real example rather than trying to manufacture a viable plan from “what if’s.”

We would like to create a white paper out of this meeting to share with the Hawaii business and nonprofit community, so your insights and feedback are important to makeing this the best it can be! We welcome virtual attendees! Please go ahead and register so we can send you last minute details. Then join us IRT via the Twitter tag #SMCHI or in the chat room at our live video stream: http://bit.ly/smchitv

Our year end event is all about you. It is a party to celebrate the accomplishments of the people and the organizations in Hawaii. We are not having a contest – we are acknowledging all of our peers for their myriad of accomplishments! (If you want a contest, submit your brilliant social media campaigns to Pacific Edge!)

Step One: Add your social media accomplishments using our simple form. We will then add it to the slide show loop we are creating for the Dec 15 year in review party. We will also be aggregating this information to present to the local media and to help define Hawaii in the Social Media Community worldwide. Short Link: http://bit.ly/aBMlyb

For our November, 2010 program, we will dive deeper into the age old question: “How?!”

With over 91 million web pages dedicated to telling the world about social media, we’re pulling in local experts to give us their insights on developing a social media strategy relevant to the Hawaii market.

Many times, the focus is on the technology. Have you heard someone say “How can I use Twitter for my business?” But perhaps our real focus needs to center on understanding the behaviors of our current and aspirational customer relationships. Building a network for them, letting them build the conversation. And what about using social media for recruiting, for tech support, for direct sales as well as for marketing and top level branding? There are numerous ways to approach “social media strategy” for your organization.

This program will offer hands-on, roundtable discussions focused on using social media in various types of business and for various purposes. So whether you are in marketing or HR, are for profit or non-profit, gov or edu, travel or retail, services or B2B, you’ll have an opportunity to explore what tools and tactics can be useful for accomplishing your goals. Attendees will be able to ask questions and incorporate best practices into the evening. We’ll summarize the discussion points and you are guaranteed to leave with specific do’s and don’ts for using social media.

Date: Tuesday, November 9, 2010
Time: Doors open at 5:30 for networking; program runs from 6 – 7 pm.
Location: Ka Restaurant at Ward Center
Fee: This event is free and open to the public. Drinks and food will be available for purchase.

Come see how we use Twitter to manage the information flow at this event for live and virtual attendees, on multiple screens!

It was a very useful and informed discussion, and I believe everyone will be a beneficiary from our collective meeting and clearing of the minds!

History:
I launched our Hawaii chapter in October 2008, public meetings launched in March, 2009. We have over 400 on our email list, and spent 6 months in 2009 shepherding a non-profit from web 1.0 to a full social media presence ont the web. (www.hanabuild.org). Our early meetings were 101, so others could follow along as we created the social assets for our nonprofit. We had, BTW, 14 who applied to the program.

What Matters Now:

Our meetings have done a superb job at attracting Hawaii organizations (for profit and nonprofit) to come and learn about social media. But we are not attracting or supporting the practitioners, as is our main goal. This meeting discussed that in detail along with the requirements and advantages of becoming an Official Chapter of the Social Media Club. You can see the attendees here.

Official Chapter status for Social Media Club: It requires a minimum of 10 paid pProfessional Members ($100 per professional membership; nonprofits may join for $50 and students for $25.) There are numerous benefits you can read about here, however the main one IMO is that we can fall under their nonprofit status and they will handle all bookkeeping, legal, and insurance for us. This gives us a tremendous amount of flexibility to actually accomplish things in support of our local community and organizations. Overall consensus appeared to be in favor of seeking this. Join the Social Media Club here.

These are the key points we distilled:

There is interest in having practitioners-only meetings where we can talk at a high level about solving problems and using social media tools. This is professional development and peer-to-peer support, where we can talk openly in a mutually respectful manner. Non-members could be invited to attend one or two times to check it out.

There is interest in continuing to hold educational outreach meetings for the business/nonprofit community at large.

The amount of time required to convene these meetings is a concern. We are looking at having monthly meetings for the official, paid members and quarterly or semi-annual public events on a larger scale, possibly even another Podcamp-type event.

Rox has been carrying the load for 2 years and wants a break.

The name, “with “Club” in it, is confusing for people. It sounds private but it’s really very open. That has been a communication challenge.

Like most groups, we have way more ideas than we can execute.

Specific Goals:

Help promote the members so they can attract clients looking for professional social media services.

Create a local Speaker’s Directory so other associations and organizations can find speakers fluent in the social web.

Work with the SMCEDU group nationwide in develop related curricula.

Develop special interest groups within our larger group who can meet at different times on specific topics (think Facebook, blogging, video, etc.)

Connect more directly and more often with neighbor island members. Mahalo a nui to Peter Liu who came from Maui!

Share more case studies and real life examples of solving problems with social media tools and strategy.

Collaborate more specifically with related groups, such as PRSA, IABC, SMEI, etc.

Consider changing to the 4th Tuesday to avoid conflicts with KanuHawaii and SMEI; after work for now, though prefer venue with easy parking. (We are looking in to this at several places.)

Segment our email list so we can communicate more directly and respectfully with our audience.

Use the email newsletter to feature members each month.

Let’s continue the conversation here and let us know how this group can serve you and what you can contribute to it. And be sure to join our email list so get the announcements and updates!

Everything is NEW this month! Please read closely.

NEW DAY: Our next monthly gathering is TUESDAY, June 8th, 5:30 – 7:00 p.m.!

NEW LOCATION: Fresh Café Scroll down for directions. Hat tip to Tara Coomans for scouting a new location for us.

NEW FORMAT: Our topic is using location-based social networks. However! This month we are having an informal meetup to chat and socialize with each other; there will not be a formal presentation. There will be person to person information sharing! Food and drinks will be available for purchase; appetites are welcome.

We are mixing up our meetings this year: even-numbered months will be informal talk story get-togethers while odd-numbered months will have a formal presentation for in-depth learning and sharing. Come check in with your favorite geo-social app or learn what the heck we are talking about and how it might affect your business.

Read this article to get up and running fast on location-based social networks. We’ll be showing each other how the apps work on our iPhones and Androids at the June meetup. Hat tip to Tess Staadecker for sharing this article with us.

UPDATE: Local tech guru Ryan Ozawa also wrote two articles on these services. Check them out:
Overview, from November 2009

We are not having a formal meeting this month however! We want to point you to three events happening in April that will be serving as social networking opportunities. Read on!

Social Media Club Hawaii (SMCHI) Executive Meeting
Thursday, April 8th
7:00 – 8:30 PM
Longhi’s, Ala Moana Center

We will be meeting to discuss the programs and chapter activity for the rest of 2010. Our meetings are open and we welcome your participation and input. We will also be discussing whether to have meetings on Thur nights or Friday nights, so please let us know if you have an opinion on that!

Tweetup at Blue Hawaii Lifestyle
Tuesday, April 13th
7 – 9 PM
Blue Hawaii Lifestyle, Ala Moana Center

Some of the most useful learning comes these days at the informal gatherings known as tweetups. People find out about the meetup on Twitter, RSVP on Twtvite, a Twitter-based application, and show up to share tips and talk story while posting messages to Twitter and photos to various sharing sites. There will be free parking at Ala Moana Center and you can snack on the ono-licious acai bowls at Blue Hawaii Lifestyle! Located on the second floor near Nordstom’s and across from Lululemon. This event is free and open to the public.
Learn more and RSVP here.

Monthly Meeting of PRSA Hawaii
Wednesday, April 21st
5:30 – 7:00 PM
McNeil Wilson Communications, Honolulu

We often collaborate with our PR colleagues and this month their topic is Branding. One of my most frequently used presentation slides states a precept of the social web: “Customers own the brand.” Now that everyone is a publisher (including the brand itself) the relationship between customers, companies, and the brands they share has changed dramatically.

This event features networking followed by a teleseminar beamed into the theatre at McNeil Wilson Communications.
Click here to learn more and RSVP.
(There is a nominal fee for this event, which includes light refreshments.)

Aloha,
